electrolytes | measurement of the level of ions (sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, and chlorine) in the blood |
antidiabetics | oral drugs that stimulate the pancreas to produce and release insulin |
insulin | a natural hormone derived from beef or pork pancreas that is used to treat diabetic patients |
GTT - glucose tolerance test | test in which glucose is administered either orally or intravenously, and then blood and urine samples are measured at specific intervals to determine glucose levels |
FBS - fasting blood sugar | test to measure the level of glucose in the blood after a 12-hour fast |
anabolic steroids | substance prescrived for AIDS patients to counteract wasting syndrome |
thyroidectomy | excision of the thyroid gland |
PPBS - postprandial blood sugar | measurement of the glucose level after a meal |
hypophysectomy | exision of the pituitary gland |
ADH - antidiuretic hormone | drug classification for vasopressin |
radioiodine therapy | use of radioactive iodine to treat disease, such as destruction and removal of thyroid tumor cells |
corticosteroids | class of drugs used to treat inflammatory illnesses, including arthritis |
T3, T4 | hormones produced by the thyroid gland |
HRT - hormone replacement therapy | drugs used to replace a hormone deficiency |
thyroid scan | imaging technique in which a radioactive substance is administered to visualize a gland with a scanning device; used to detect tumors |
