| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Mass | The amount of matter in the sample |
| Matter | Anything that occupies space and has mass |
| Volume | How much room the sample takes up in space |
| Density | A measure of the ratio of an object's mass to its volume |
| Pressure | The force that a sample of gas in a closed container exerts on the container walls; a solid or liquid standing in an environment and the force that a gas is exerting on the walls of the environment and everything in it (including its surface) |
| STP | 760 torr (760 mmHg) = 1 atm; 273 degrees Kelvin |
| Kinetic Energy | The energy that an object possesses by virtue of the fact that it is moving; the faster the molecules move, the higher their kinetic energy |
| Barometer/Manometer | Uses liquid metal mercury to determine atmospheric pressure |
| Calorimeter | Measures energy |
| Heat | The flow of energy from a body at a higher temperature to one at a lower temperature |
| Temperature | Average kinetic energy |
| Heat Capacity | Amount of heat a substance must absorb for its temperature to be raised 1 degree Celsius |
| Specific Heat | THe heat capacity of 1 gram of a substance |
| q=mc(delta)T | q=heat; m=mass; c=specific heat; (delta)T=difference between initial and final temperatures) |
| Temperature in Kelvin | K= 273 + degrees Celsius |
| Energy Measurement | 1 calorie = 4.186 joules |
