What did the 2nd Continental Congress give itself the power to do? declare war, make treaties/alliances, create/regulate an army/navy, borrow money for war
What powers were left with the individual states? tax, create laws, enforce laws
List four post-Revolutionary War troubles the U.S. had. destroyed economy, rampant unemployment, no trading with Europe or Carribean, no value to american currency.
What is the gold standard? each dollar is worth a certain size of a chunk of gold. you could go to the bank and hand the a dollar and say that you wanted as much gold as that dollar would get you.
Why did currency have little value? because we overprinted paper money and did not have enough gold to equal it.
Why were farmers the worst off? they depended on their children to run the farms, so when some went off to war, their prodictivity went down. when few returned, their prodictivity stayed low. taxes were imposed because of the war, and farmers did not have enough money to pay it off.
What happened to bankrupt farmers? their properties were taken away by the banks, who kept them for their own good. (forclosure)
Who was Daniel Shay? a farmer who was having difficulties paying for everything becuase of the war. he led shay's rebellion.
Who were carpetbaggers? bankers who stole forclosed properties for their own good.
Why couldn't Shay's rebellion be put down easily? Mass. had to deal with it on its own becuase federal gov't could not intervene. many people from that part of Mass were rebelling, so they couldn't control it. people had to wait two weeks for people from Boston to resolve the issue.
What happened at the hanging of Daniel Shay? a letter was read from the president, pardoning his hanging because he could sympathize with his reasonings behind his actions.
What was the result of Shay's Rebellion? Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and other leaders saw this disagreement as a weakness becuase they feared that it could topple the union. called a constitutional convention where they established a formal plan of gov't. gave federal gov't more power.
3 strengths of the Articles of Confederation. granted each state's citizens freedom, established depts. of War, Marine, Treasury, and Foreign Affairs, waged a war against British
3 weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation no power to coin $; therefore each state had different currency, could not impose taxes, no court system
