what are politics? process by which governments make and carry out decisions determining whose interest will be served.
What are natural rights? all people posses natural or human rights.
what is the social contract? theory of rule saying the 1st government formed as a result of people agreeing among themselves submitting to the authority of the state which in turn would protect and support.
What does confederal mean? independent states joining forces to help strengthen the central authority.
What is a liberal democracy? form of democracy that protects the rights of the minority.
what is legitimacy? when rulers are seen as right and proper by important segments of a nations population.
What does policy mean? any decisions made by government in pursuit of a particular goal.
what is free enterprise? an economic system in which individuals and businesses are free to engage in economic activity with a minimum of government interference.
What does parliamentary mean? the executive and legislative branches of government are combined.
what is the divine right of kings? theory put forth that states a king only has to answer to God and his powers come from above and not the people he rules.
what is a monarchy? when political power is exercised by a single ruler, like a king or queen.
what is liberty? the ability of people to act and think as they choose so long as their choices do no harm to the liberty or well-being of others.
what is sovereignty? the supreme power of the state to act within the territories.
what is the unitary system? all authority is vested in a central government from which regional and local governments derive their powers.
what is competition? central feature of the free enterprise system.
how is the prime minister elected, what is his job, and how is he removed? He is chosen by and from and elected legislature called parliament. he is the leader of the majority party, appoints cabinet members. if he loses support of the majority party, he must step down as well as well as the cabinet members.
what is dictatorship and how does it work? one person, a dictator, or small group of people has unlimited power over government, which is usually controlled by force. they rule with force and fear.
what is public good? promotion of general welfare.
what are the basic functions of government? ensure national security, maintain order, resolve conflict, provide services, and provide for the public good.
what is compromise? the ability of two opposing groups to give up some of their demands and come to an agreement.
