QuestionAnswer
What is a quorum? The number of people necessary in in order to conduct business.
What is a revenue bill? Bills that seek to raise money. Must start in the House of Representatives.
What is a social contract theory? How people give up rights in order to maintain a social balance in their community.
What is a referendum? The principle or practice of referring measures proposed or passed by a legislative body to the vote of the electorate for approval or rejection.
What is separation of powers? The principle or system of vesting in separate branches the executive, legislative, and judicial powers of a government.
What a incumbent? Holding an indicated position, role, office, etc.
What is gerrymandering? The dividing of a state, county, etc.
What is lobbying? An entrance hall, corridor, or vestibule, as in a public building, often serving as an anteroom.
What is a subpoena? The usual writ for the summoning of witnesses or the submission of evidence, as records or documents, before a court or other deliberative body.
What is an ex post facto law? A civil or criminal law with retroactive effect.
What is a bill of attainder? An act of legislature finding a person guilty of treason or felony without trial.
What is jurisdiction? The right, power, or authority to administer justice by hearing and determining controversies.
What is a filibuster? The use of irregular or obstructive tactics by a member of a legislative assembly to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored or to force a decision against the will of the majority.
What types of vetoes can the governor of IL use that the President cannot? Amendantory veto.
How can congress override a veto? Congress can override a veto by 2/3 of their vote.
