Joint Actions
Question | Answer |

Flexion | A movement that decreases the angle between the bones at the joint eg. bending the leg at the knee |
Extension | Increases the angle between bones at the joint. Eg. straightening the leg |
Abduction | Moving a body part away from the midline of the body. Eg. Raising the arm or leg to the side. |
Adduction | Movement of a body part towards the mid line of the body eg. lowering the arm or leg towards the midline |
Inversion | Rotation of the foot to make the sole of the foot face inwards |
Eversion | Rotation of the foot to make the sole of the foot face outwards. |
Rotation | Moving a body part such as the head or trunk around on it's long axis. |
Circumduction | The circular movement of a body part. Eg. making a large movement with the arm that describes a cone space. |
Pronation | Rotation of the hand and forearm that causes the palm to face downwards. |
Supination | Rotation of the hand and forearm that causes the palm to face upwards |
Dorsiflexion | Flexion of the ankle that pulls the top of the foot towards the tibia. |
Plantar flexion | Extension of the ankle so the top of the foot moves away from the tibia ie. pointing the toes. |
