Directional Terms

| cranial | toward the head or looking up |
| caudal | toward the tailbone or looking down |
| central | toward the trunk |
| peripheral | toward the extremities |
| medial | toward the midline (top to bottom) |
| lateral | toward the side |
| inner aspect | inside |
| supine | lying on back, face up |
| prone | lying on abdomen |
| deep | away from the surface |
| superficial | toward the surface |
| proximal | toward the origin of a structure |
| distal | away from the origin of a structure |
| afferent (a-arrive) | conducting toward a structure |
| efferent (e-exit) | conducting away from a structure |
| frontal (coronal) | plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts |
| sagittal | plane that divides the body into right and left parts |
| midsagittal | plane that passes through the body axis dividing the body into equal right and left halves |
| transverse | plane that divides the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) parts |
