superior above
inferior below
anterior/ventral front
posterior/dorsal back
cranial toward the head or looking up
caudal toward the tailbone or looking down
central toward the trunk
peripheral toward the extremities
medial toward the midline (top to bottom)
lateral toward the side
inner aspect inside
supine lying on back, face up
prone lying on abdomen
deep away from the surface
superficial toward the surface
proximal toward the origin of a structure
distal away from the origin of a structure
afferent (a-arrive) conducting toward a structure
efferent (e-exit) conducting away from a structure
frontal (coronal) plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
sagittal plane that divides the body into right and left parts
midsagittal plane that passes through the body axis dividing the body into equal right and left halves
transverse plane that divides the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) parts
