Anatomical directions

coronal (frontal) plane divides body into front and back sections
sagittal plane divides body into right and left sections
midsagittal plane divides body into equal right and left planes
anterior (ventral) front of the body
posterior (dorsal) back of the body
supine position face up
prone position face down
medial toward the midline from side of body
lateral moving from the midline toward side of the body
transverse plane divides body into top and bottom sections
superior upper half of body
inferior lower half of body
cephalad moving toward the head superiorly
caudad moving toward the tail bone inferiorly
distal toward the end of a limb from trunk of the body
proximal from the end of a limb toward trunk of a body
superficial (external) on surface of the body
deep (internal) below the surface of the body (inside the body)
