Cavities&Mesenteries

Body cavities and mesenteries A+P

TermDefinition
Body Cavities Dorsal, Ventral- thoracic, pericardial, abdominal, pelvic
Potential Space Occurs between visceral and parietal spaces
Serosa is also known as serous membranes
Serosa in plural terms serosae
Serosa Continuous sheet doubled over to form two layers with narrow space in between. Contains small amounts of fluid to provide lubrication (name of fluid dependent on location)
Pleura Lines thoracic cavity and organs. Forms two pleural sacs lining either side of the mediastinum
Mediastinum wall that divides pleural cavity and contains thoracic organs (heart, esophagus, trachea)
Pulmonary pleura is also called Visceral Pleura
Pulmonary (Visceral) Pleura Thin serosal lining of the surface of the lung, very tightly adhered
Parietal Pleura Thin serosa lining the walls of the thoracic cavity, mediastinum, and diaphragm. Right and left join to form the mediastinum.
Caval Fold small pocket in right mediastinum to cover vena cava
Pulmonary Ligaments portion of serosa between parietal and visceral, suspends lungs from wall
Pericardial Cavity Pericardium - two parts (Visceral pericardium and Parietal pericardium)
Pericardium serosal membrane associated with the heart
Visceral Pericardium Epicardium- serosa overlying the heart
Parietal Pericardium Serosa lining pericardial sac
Diaphragm divides thoracic and abdominal cavities, thin muscle important in respiration along with external intercostal muscles, and several openings for structures- vena cava, esophagus, aorta
Abdominal Cavity Diaphragm to pelvis inlet, abdominal organs suspended from dorsal portion of abdominal cavity to liver
Visceral peritoneum serosal lining of abdominal organs
Parietal peritoneum serosa lining walls of the abdominal cavity
Ligaments of the liver Falciform, Round, Coronary
Falciform ligament fatty, located between left and right halves, extends to ventral wall
Round ligament remnant of fetal blood vessels, between liver and diaphragm
Coronary ligament extension of falciform to central tendon of diaphragm
Omentum Sheets of visceral peritoneum
Greater omentum overlays organs, from greater curvature of stomach to dorsal abdominal wall via pelvic inlet, laced with fat, out pocketing of visceral peritoneum, two sheets
Lesser Omentum lesser curvature of the stomach to the liver
Mesentery double layer of visceral peritoneum, connects to intestines
Abdominal Ligaments From Lesser Omentum Gastrohepatic and Hepatoduodenal
Abdominal Ligaments from Greater Omentum Gastrosplenic
Abdominal Ligaments from dorsal wall of abdominal cavity Mesoduodenum, Mesojejunum, Mesoileum, and Mesocolon
Root of mesentery Root of attachment
Pelvic cavity pelvis inlet to pelvic outlet, ligaments of the urinary bladder
Median Ligament is found in Pelvic cavity
Median ligament to ventral walls
Lateral ligament is found in Pelvic cavity
Lateral ligament to lateral walls
Ligaments of the female reproductive system Broad ligament, suspensory ovarian ligament, round ligament
Round ligament lateral attachment of horns to lateral wall
Suspensory ovarian ligament spay, increase blood pressure
Broad ligament mesometrium, mesovarium, mesosalpinx, contains ovarian pedicle- uterine artery and vein, mesovarium
