Which class were JP's usually made up of? Gentry class
What was the role of a JP? maintain law and order in their community, be judges for lesser crimes.
Were Jp's paid? No, they were unpaid.
What was the King of England the undisputed head of? political system and Church of England
What was James I key belief on the monarchy? The divine right of kings - God chose him to be king, disobedience was seen as sinful against God.
What is absolutism? System of power controlled by one ruler alone with far fewer restrictions on their power.
Who were James I parents? Mother - Mary, Queen of scots Father - Lord Darnley
Who did James I marry? Anne of Denmark, 1589
Who was the Trusted advisor of Queen Elizabeth and James? Robert Cecil
How did Elizabeth handle finaces? Not good at all, left about £350,000 debt for James I, subsidies were undervalued, finances badly damaged by recent military adventures.
What was the act of supremacy in 1558? The re-establishment of the Church of England independence from Rome.
What is the 'Great chain of being'? The hierarchical structure that many people believed in and followed religiously, displayed God at the top with humanity as 'nobility'.
What is the term used to describe the rights of a monarch? Prerogative
What issue caused resentment of land owners over inheritance land? Wardships
What issue caused resentment against the monarch, especially in Southern areas of England? Purveyance
What did parliament draft in 1604 which highlighted their discontent with James I? Form of apology and satisfaction
What grievances did commons have that made them draw up the form? The privileges of the subjects were at a standstill, whereas the kings privileges were growing everyday.
What was the main problem that people had with purveyance? The king and his family would visit and already make struggling people have to give him free provisions and transport, whilst being treated by luxury. People complained that the richest man didn't have to pay for anything.
How did James Try to solve this issue of purveyance? He was willing to compensate by giving up part of it, but in return wanted compensation for this.
What was the problem with the form of apology and satisfaction? The apology was never presented to James formerly, however he did see a copy and scolded parliament by reminding them of his power over them, saying ' you do many things rashly'.
Who was Queen Elizabeth most notoriously known for defeating? The Spanish Armada in July 1588
Why was parliament cautious with expressing concerns with Elizabeth? She was beginning to get old and were cautious about how powerful she was and she could be ruthless sometimes.
Why was social mobility difficult in the class system? Making money was difficult and people looked down upon peasants so if you were typically born one, you would die as one.
Why could Women easily jump between classes? Through marriage with men of higher nobility.
How often did Parliament meet together? They met irregularly, timing and length of sessions were based upon the kings discretion
How were mp's elected? They were typically elected by wealthy landowners
