Digestive System

Bolus chewed ball of food ready to swallow
Chyme semi-liquid food mixture leaving the stomach
Peristalsis wave-like muscle contractions moving food through the tract
Enzyme a protein that speeds up chemical digestion
Villi/Microvilli small intestine structures that increase surface area for absorption
Emulsification breaking large fat globules into smaller droplets (done by bile)
Absorption nutrients passing from the digestive tract into the bloodstream
What is the order that the food goes in? Mouth → Esophagus → Stomach → Small Intestine → Large Intestine → Rectum → Anus (Liver, gallbladder, and pancreas contribute along the way but are not part of the main tract.)
What is the difference between a bolus and chyme? chyme is leaving the stomach as a liquid, bolus is solid food chewed up
Which organ absorbs the most nutrients, and what structures help it do this? small intestine, microvilli help
What role does bile play, and where is it made vs. stored? it helps break down fat globs into smaller ones, made in the liver stored in the gall bladder.
Why is the pancreas considered both a digestive organ and part of the endocrine system? it regulates blood sugar.
