Soft Tissue Landmark

TermDefinition
Rectus abdominis muscles (“6 pack”) Front of the abdomen
Biceps brachii muscle The bulging part of upper arm when flexing arm
Gastrocnemius muscle Largest muscle in calf located in the middle
Patellar ligament Below the anterior knee
Thenar eminence Chicken drumstick shaped region located directly below the thumb
Tendons of extensor digitorum Tendons that travel across the back of the wrist and hand to the tips of the finger to straighten the fingers
Achilles tendon= Calcaneal tendon Located on the calf, between the ankles. Connects your calf muscles to your heel bone (calcaneus) for movement
Xiphoid process The pointy structure at the bottom of the sternum
Anatomical snuff box Extend thumb and locate the hollow region below the thumb and slightly above the wrist
Dimple of Posterior Superior Iliac Spine (PSIS) Located on the lower back just above the buttocks
Carpal tunnel Middle of the inner wrist
McBurney's point Sits one-third of the distance from the right hip bone towards the navel on the lower right quadrant.
Why is McBurney's point named that? Named after the doctor who first described this technique to better and quickly diagnosis appendicitis.
