A&P Directional Term

Directional terms

TermDefinition
Medial (towards midline)
Lateral (towards side)
Proximal (closer to trunk): used only on limbs (arms/legs)
Distal (farther away from trunk): used only on limbs (arms/legs)
Superficial external
Deep internal
Dorsal back surface
Ventral belly surface
Cranial/Cephalad toward the head used only on the trunk (tip head to bottom of spine)
Caudal toward the tail used only on the trunk (tip head to bottom of spine)
Superior = cranial/cephalad
Superior on 4 legged animals = dorsal
Inferior = caudal
Inferior 4 legged animals = ventral
Anterior = ventral
Anterior 4 legged animals = cranial/cephalad
Posterior = dorsal
Posterior 4 legged animals = caudal
