Directional terms
| Term | Definition |

| Medial | (towards midline) |
| Lateral | (towards side) |
| Proximal | (closer to trunk): used only on limbs (arms/legs) |
| Distal | (farther away from trunk): used only on limbs (arms/legs) |
| Superficial | external |
| Deep | internal |
| Dorsal | back surface |
| Ventral | belly surface |
| Cranial/Cephalad | toward the head used only on the trunk (tip head to bottom of spine) |
| Caudal | toward the tail used only on the trunk (tip head to bottom of spine) |
| Superior = | cranial/cephalad |
| Superior on 4 legged animals = | dorsal |
| Inferior = | caudal |
| Inferior 4 legged animals = | ventral |
| Anterior = | ventral |
| Anterior 4 legged animals = | cranial/cephalad |
| Posterior = | dorsal |
| Posterior 4 legged animals = | caudal |
