what is mechanical digestion? breaking food into smaller pieces without changing its chemical composition
what is chemical digestion? breaking chemical bonds in nutrients using enzymes and acids
what are the main functions of the mucosa? secretion of acids and enzymes and absorption of dietary nutrients
what structures are found in the submucosa? blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves and glands
what do blood vessels in the submucosa transport? absorbed nutrients away from digestive organs
what does the submucosa help bind together? the mucosa and the muscularis externa
what is segmentation? mixing movement caused by alternating contractions in the small intestine
what is peristalsis? wavelike contractions that propel food through the digestive tract
what is mastication? chewing - a form of mechanical digestion
