| Popular Sovereignty | The people hold the power Citizens vote to choose leaders |
| Federalism | Power is shared between national & state governments States make laws, but so does the federal government |
| Legislative | One of the three branches of government that makes laws Congress (House + Senate) |
| Executive | One of the three branches of government that enforces laws President and federal agencies |
| Judicial | One of the three branches of government that Interprets laws Courts, especially the Supreme Court |
| Supreme Law of the Land | The highest law everyone must follow The U.S. Constitution |
| Appeals | Asking a higher court to review a decision A case moving from a lower court to a higher one |
| Cabinet | Advisors to the President Heads of departments like Defense, State, etc. |
| Enumerated Powers | Powers specifically listed in the Constitution, mainly for Congress in Article I, Section 8 (example: declare war, coin money, regulate trade). |
| “Power of the Purse” | Congress’s power to tax and spend money. Congress controls government funding. |
| Committees | Small groups within Congress that study bills, hold hearings, and decide whether bills move forward. |
| Judicial Review | The power of courts to decide whether laws or government actions are constitutional. |
