| (Direct) Democracy | a government in which citizens vote on laws and select officials directly |
| Republic (representative democracy) | a government in which citizens vote on laws and select officials directly |
| Monarchy | a government ruled by a king or queen |
| Autocracy | a form of government by one person with absolute power |
| Dictatorship | a government in which the leader takes power through force or violence |
| Oligarchy | a government ruled by a few powerful people |
| Theocracy | a government controlled by religious leaders |
| Anarchy | the absence of government |
| Unitary System | a system of government in which all power is invested in a central government. |
| Confederal System (Confederation) | a system of government in which power is held by independent states. Central government is weak. |
| Federal System (Federalism) | a system of government in which power is divided and shared between a central government and state and local governments. |
