Anatomy - The Lungs

TermDefinition
Pharynx Consists of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
Trachea 10-13 cm tube connecting the larynx to the bronchi, this is the main airway to the lungs
Alveoli Many tiny air sacs in the lungs which allow for gas exchange
Bronchioles Branches of the bronchi
Bronchi A.k.a. "Bronchus," the major airway of the lungs
Diaphragm Dome-shaped muscle that contracts during resoirations
Capillaries Small branches of blood vessels
Hemoglobin Iron-rich protein in the erythrocytes that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the lungs
Bicarbonate Aids in CO2 transport, regulated by the lungs
Larynx Air passage that holds the vocal cords and voice box
