What makes up the Judicial Branch? The Supreme Court and other courts of the U.S.
What created the Supreme Court? The Judiciary Act of 1789.
The judicial Branch determines whether or not laws are _____ Constitutional.
What created the system of lower district and circuit courts? The Judiciary Act of 1789.
Who appoints federal judges? The President.
What has been done to keep judges free of party influence? Appointment for life, removal only if impeached or resigns, and salary protection.
How many district courts are there nationwide? Ninety four.
What is the court of appeals? An intermediate Court that reviews decisions made by lower courts.
What happens if the judges uphold the original decision? What happens if they do not hold up the original decision? If the judges uphold the decision, the case usually ends and the lower court's ruling stands. If the original ruling is overturned, the case will be sent back to the lower court or reopened.
What cases does the supreme court hear? Appeals on significant constitutional or federal law questions, mostly when lower courts disagree.
How many cases are sent to the Supreme Court? How many are actually tried? The Supreme Court generally receives 7,000 to 10,000 cases, but only hears 65 to 80.
Generally, what do cases that the Supreme Court hears involve? Cases involving constitutional interpretation and significant federal questions.
If the Supreme Court declines to hear a case, what happens? When the Supreme Court declines to hear a case, the lower court's ruling stands.
