Regional and Directional Terms + Body Sections and Planes of Reference

| Superior//Cephalic/Cranial | Towards the head |
| Inferior/Caudal | Away from the head |
| Anterior/Ventral | Towards the front |
| Posterior/Dorsal | Towards the back |
| Medial | Towards the midline |
| Lateral | Away from the midline |
| Deep/Internal | Away from the surface |
| Superficial/External | Closer to the surface |
| Proximal | closer to attachment (arms and legs only) |
| Distal | farther from attachment (arms and legs only) |
| Visceral | Lining OUTSIDE the organ |
| Parietal | Lining cavity walls |
| Bilateral | Same structure, opposite side of body (L and R hand) |
| Ipsilateral | Different structure, same side (L hand and L leg) |
| Contralateral | Different structures, opposite side (L hand and R leg) |
| Sagittal | Vertical line (R and L sections) |
| Midsagittal | Middle, equal R+L halves |
| Parasagittal | Off-set, unequal R+L halves |
| Transverse/Horizontal/Cross-Section | Horizontal line, superior and inferior halves |
| Frontal/Coronal | Vertical line, anterior and posterior halves |
