Regional and Directional Terms + Body Sections and Planes of Reference

Superior//Cephalic/Cranial Towards the head
Inferior/Caudal Away from the head
Anterior/Ventral Towards the front
Posterior/Dorsal Towards the back
Medial Towards the midline
Lateral Away from the midline
Deep/Internal Away from the surface
Superficial/External Closer to the surface
Proximal closer to attachment (arms and legs only)
Distal farther from attachment (arms and legs only)
Visceral Lining OUTSIDE the organ
Parietal Lining cavity walls
Bilateral Same structure, opposite side of body (L and R hand)
Ipsilateral Different structure, same side (L hand and L leg)
Contralateral Different structures, opposite side (L hand and R leg)
Sagittal Vertical line (R and L sections)
Midsagittal Middle, equal R+L halves
Parasagittal Off-set, unequal R+L halves
Transverse/Horizontal/Cross-Section Horizontal line, superior and inferior halves
Frontal/Coronal Vertical line, anterior and posterior halves
