Dev of the US Govt
| Term | Definition |

| amendment | a change, or addition to, a document, such as the US Constitution |
| preamble | introduction to a document, such as the US Constitution |
| ratify | to approve of something and make it official, such as a constitution or other official document |
| Articles of Confederation | the first attempt at a national constitution, which left most power in the hands of the states and gave very few powers to the federal (national) government |
| Bicameral | legislative body containing two parts, such as the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives |
| Bill of Rights | list of peoples’ rights contained in the U.S. Constitution that the government must protect (first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution) |
| Charter | document issued by a government allowing something to be established |
| Consent of the Governed | the idea that the people of a place must give permission to be governed a certain way (the people have ultimate authority/power) |
| Compromise | an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making mutual concessions. This means both parties get something they want but need to also give something back in return |
| Constitutional Convention | meeting of delegates of the 13 states to try to resolve the issues of the failed Articles of Confederation and create a new Constitution that would balance the needs of both the federal government and the various state governments |
| Distribution of Power | how government authority is divided between various institutions (groups) |
| Factions | groups of people with a similar point of view who work together to promote their ideas |
| Federalists | those who supported a strong central/federal government |
| Anti-Federalists | those who supported a weaker federal/central government in favor of states’ right |
| States’ Rights | political powers held by state governments that are not granted to the federal government |
