| Term | Definition |

| Nervous System | Made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves |
| Central Nervous System (CNS) | Integrates incoming pieces of sensory info, evaluates the info, and initiates an outgoing response |
| Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) | Consists of nerve tissue that lie in the periphery, or "outer regions", of the nervous system |
| Somatic Nervous System (SNS) | Regulates the somatic effectors (the skeletal muscles) |
| Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) | Carry info to the autonomic, or visceral, effectors mainly the smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, glands, adipose tissue, and other "involuntary" tissue |
| Enteric Nervous System (ENS) | so-called "second brain" in the wall of the gut, also known as the "intestinal nervous system" |
| Exteroceptors | Located on or near body surface, often called cutaneous receptors (example: pressure, touch, pain, temperature) |
| Visceroceptors (interoceptors) | Located internally often within the organs or viscera. Provide body with info about internal environment (example: pressure, stretch, chemical changes, hunger, thirst) |
| Plasma | Liquid part of the blood; clear, straw-colored fluid; made up of 90% water and 10% solutes |
| Platelets | Small, pale bodies that appear as irregular spindles or oval disks |
| Lymphatic System | Made up of lymph, lymphatic vessels, isolated structures containing lymphoid tissue |
| Respiratory System | Functions as an air distributor and a gas exchanger so that oxygen can be supplied to and carbon dioxide removed from the body's cells |
