| treason | Crime which consists of a US citizen going to war against the US or giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the country |
| extradition | Legal process of returning a criminal (who fled to another state) to the state where the crime was committed in order to stand trial |
| supremacy clause | Constitutional clause that sets the US Constitution, the laws of the national government, and the treaties as the "supreme highest law of the land" |
| slander | Defaming a person verbally |
| libel | Published (written) false statements defaming a person to injure his reputation |
| grand jury | Jury that considers the prosecution's case against the accused and determines whether there is enough evidence against the accused to warrant a jury trial for guilt or innocence |
| due process | Certain rules that the government must follow by which a person cannot be imprisoned, have his property taken away, or be sentenced to death without a fair and proper trial |
| eminent domain | The right of government to take private property for public purposes while compensating the property owner |
| supoena | Legal order requiring a person to appear in court as a witness |
| bail | Money paid to a guarantee a court appearance, allowing the accused to be free while awaiting trial |
| literacy tests | Tests that required voters to be literate to vote |
| white primaries | Restricted party primaries and candidate selection to whites only |
| grandfather clauses | Provisions for voters to avoid literacy tests or poll taxes if their grandfathers were eligible to vote before 1867; designed to prevent black voters from voting |
| gerrymandering | 1. redrawing district lines so back voters had less influence 2. redrawing district lines to favor the political party that controls a state legislature |
| Prohibition | The nationwide ban on the manufacture sale, and transportation of liquor from 1920 to 1933. |
| suffrage | The right to vote; also called franchise |
| franchise | The right to vote; also called suffrage |
| lame duck | Official still in office but has not been elected; often refers to a president who lost an election or cannot stand for reelection and must serve out the rest of his term |
| poll tax | Tax required before one could vote; used in some states to prevent poor African Americans from voting- this was abolished by the 24th Amendment |
