Types and Purposes of Govt Vocab Words

Monarch king or queen
Dictator person who rules with absolute power
democracy form of government in which the people of a country either rule directly or through elected representatives
direct democracy a form of government in which all people meet in one place to make laws and decide what actions to take
representative democracy a form of government in which the people elect representatives to carry on the work of government for them.
republic a form of government in which the people elect representatives to carry on the work of government for them.
constiution a written plan of government
human rights basic rights all people are entitled to as human beings
confederation a loose association of states
sovereignty a government's authority, or absolute power.
Parliament the lawmaking part of British government
Federalism system of government in which power of government are divided between state government (people of the state) ant national government (whole country)
compromise an agreement in which each side give up part of its demands
ratification approval by a formal vote (to pass laws and other actions)
Federalists supporters of the United States Constitution who wanted to to pass and succeed
Antifederalists opponents of the Constitution who urged its rejection; they did not want the Constitution
