Parties, Political Participation and Congress Structure

TermDefinition
Political Parties Definition: Coalitions of people who form a united front to win control of the government and implement policies Purpose: Build coalitions, mobilize voters and win. Simplify understanding policy and candidates, filter less experienced candidates.
Partisanship Affiliation with a political party
Forms of Political Participation Campaign events, donations, protests, strikes, fundraising, campaign displays, etc
Duverger's Law Strong tendency for two political parties to dominate politics in a system that uses plurality voting system and single-member districts. Discourages other parties that are not the two main, to not continue.
Senate Composition/ Qualifications Terms are six years Made up of 100 members Age minimum: 30
House of Representatives Composition/ Qualifications Terms are two years Made up of 435 members Age minimum: 25
Descriptive Representation Representatives have same racial, gender, religious and general background/ upbringing as constituents
Substantive Representation Representatives who ideologically represent their constituents. Agree on policies, have similar stances, etc
Trustee Representation Representative uses their own judgement to make decisions they believe are in the best interest of the public
Delegate Representation Representative follows expressed wishes of constituents even if they personally disagree
Necessary and Proper Clause Congress's powers beyond what is explicitly expressed but also the authority to use all means necessary and proper to execute those expressed powers.
Elastic Clause Congress can write laws
Plurality System type of electoral system in which, to win a seat in a representative body, a candidate need only receive the most votes in the election, not necessarily a majority of the votes cast
