| Great Compromise | Happened at the Constitutional Convention. Established Bi-cameral legislature; one with population-based representation (House of Rep), one with equal representation (Senate) |
| Bicameral Legislature | Legislative body with two chambers |
| Cooperative Federalism | Power divided between states and central authority. (Fed Power can come from withholding aid) (opposite of unitary system) |
| Anti-Federalists | Wanted states to have more autonomy/ control and separation from federal government. Emphasized civil liberties and supported Bill of Rights |
| 1st Amendment | Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion, Assembly and Petition |
| 13th Amendment | Ended slavery in 1864. (exception is when you are incarcerated) |
| 14th Amendment | Defines American Citizen and grants equal protection under the law ("Equal Protection Clause"), limits discrimination |
| 19th Amendment | Cannot discriminate against voting based on sex; gave women the right to vote 1920 |
| Representative Democracy | People vote elected individuals who play major roles in government decision-making. (System of U.S.) |
| Liberty | 1. Declaration of Independence 2. Civil Rights (Life, Liberty & Pursuit of Happiness) |
| Plessy vs. Ferguson | SCOTUS ruled that racial segregation laws were acceptable as long as each section had equal resources. Coining doctrine "Separate but equal" |
| Politics | Conflicts and struggles over leadership, structure and government policies |
| Articles of Confederation | Very weak government document. No national laws or army. Government had no power to collect taxes |
| Constitutional Convention | This is the event where The Great Compromise was established as well as the 3/5ths Compromise |
| 10th Amendment | Amendment that emphasizes federalism principle. Power not reserved to the Federal Government is given to the states |
