What are the main functions of axial muscles? They support and move the head, neck, and trunk, and help with breathing and posture.
What are the three main groups of axial muscles? Muscles of the head and neck, trunk, and vertebral column.
What is the main muscle used for breathing? The diaphragm.
Which muscles are responsible for moving the head? Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius.
What muscle closes the jaw? The masseter.
Which abdominal muscles compress the abdomen? Rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis.
: What is the function of the rectus abdominis? Flexes the vertebral column and compresses abdominal contents.
What are the erector spinae muscles responsible for? Extending and maintaining posture of the vertebral column.
Which muscles are involved in facial expression? Orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, zygomaticus, and frontalis.
What muscle elevates the ribs during inhalation? External intercostals.
What do appendicular muscles control? Movement of the limbs and stabilization of the shoulder and pelvic girdles.
What is the prime mover for arm abduction? The deltoid.
Which muscle flexes the forearm at the elbow? The biceps brachii.
Which muscle extends the forearm at the elbow? The triceps brachii.
What muscle group flexes the thigh and extends the leg? The quadriceps femoris group.
Which muscles make up the quadriceps femoris? Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius.
What muscle group extends the thigh and flexes the leg? The hamstrings.
What muscles form the hamstrings? Biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus.
Which muscle is the main plantar flexor of the foot? The gastrocnemius.
What muscle allows dorsiflexion of the foot? The tibialis anterior.
