Anabolism Chemical reactions building complex molecules like protein synthesis
catabolism Chemical reactions breaking down complex molecules like digestion
Anatomical Position Standard body position with body erect, arms at sides, and palms forward
Supine Lying face upward
Prone Lying face downward
Sagittal Plane Divides the body into right and left halves.
Alarm Reaction The “fight or flight” stage where the sympathetic nervous system is activated
Sphenoid Bone Butterfly-shaped bone at skull base; forms part of cranial floor
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Increases blood calcium by stimulating osteoclasts
Ceruminous Glands Modified sweat glands that produce earwax
Hypodermis Subcutaneous layer of fat and connective tissue beneath the dermis.
Apocrine Glands Sweat glands found in axilla and groin; active during puberty
Cortisol A hormone that maintains blood glucose and suppresses inflammation during stress
Solvent Substance that dissolves another
Polar Molecule Molecule with unequal charge distribution
