What are the two main cavities of the body? What organs does each contain? Dorsal, and ventral cavities. Dorsal contains the cranial cavity (brain), and spinal cavity (spinal cord). Ventral contains the thoracic cavity (lungs, and heart), abdominal cavity (stomach, liver, intestine) and pelvic (reproductive).
Anabolism versus catabolism Catabolism breaks down molecules to release energy, and anabolism uses energy to synthesize new molecules.
Levels of organization of the body are? Cellular, organelle, chemical, tissue, organ, system, and organism.
What are the different types of direct cell junctions? Tight junctions, desmosomes, adherens junctions, and gap junctions.
How do you distinguish the three types of muscle tissue? Skeletal muscle is striated with long multinucleated fibers, cardiac muscle is striated with short, branched fibers with a central nucleus as well as intercalated discs connecting the cells, smooth muscle has spindle-shaped fibers and a single nucleus.
What is the different between endocrine and exocrine glands? Endocrine glands secrete hormones into the bloodstream, exocrine glands excrete a substance through ducts into a cavity, or the external body surface.
What are the six major structures of a typic long bone? Diaphysis, epiphysis, medullary cavity, periosteum, articular cartilage, and compact bone.
What are the three major types of chemical bonds? What constitutes them? Ionic bonds through attraction of oppositely charged ions, Covalent bonds through the sharing of electrons, and hydrogen bonds through a slightly positive charged hydrogen atom attracted to a slight negative charge atom like oxygen, or nitrogen.
What are the three microscopic glands that reside in the skin? The sweat glands used for thermal regulation, sebaceous glands used for protecting the body and maintaining skin health, and ceruminous glands for ear protection.
What are the quadrants, and regions of the abdominopelvic cavity? Right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, and left lower quadrant. Right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac, right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar, right iliac, hypogastric, and left iliac regions.
