QuestionAnswer
What is anatomy and what is physiology? Anatomy is the study of body structure (what the body is made of), while physiology is the study of how those structures function (how the body works)
What is homeostasis? Homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes — for example, keeping body temperature around 37°C
What are the main levels of organization in the body? Chemical → Cellular → Tissue → Organ → System → Organism level
What are the four main elements that make up the human body? Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Nitrogen (N) — they make up about 96% of body mass
What are the main types of chemical bonds? Ionic bonds (transfer of electrons), covalent bonds (sharing of electrons), and hydrogen bonds (weak attractions between molecules)
What are carbohydrates, and what is their main function? Carbohydrates are organic compounds made of sugars; they serve as the body’s main source of energy
What is the cell membrane and its main function? The cell membrane, or plasma membrane, is a selectively permeable barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the function of mitochondria? Mitochondria are the “powerhouses” of the cell; they produce ATP through cellular respiration
What happens during mitosis? Mitosis is the process of cell division that produces two identical daughter cells for growth and repair
What are the four main types of tissues in the human body? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue It covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands that secrete substances like hormones or mucus
What is the difference between skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissue? skeletal muscle is voluntary and striated; cardiac muscle is involuntary and striated; smooth muscle is involuntary and non-striated
What are the main layers of the skin? Epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer), and hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue (beneath the skin)
What is the main function of melanin? What is the main function of melanin?
Why is the skin considered part of the body’s defense system? It forms a physical barrier against pathogens, helps regulate temperature, and prevents fluid loss
