Pelvic Girdle

TermDefinition
Pelvis - 4 bones - sacrum, coccyx, right and left os coxae - protects and supports viscera in inferior body cavity - angled anteriorly
Pelvic Girdle left and right hip bones only
Os Coxae - hip bone - ilium, ischium, pubis - these fuse between 13-15 yo - Articulates with sacrum at sacroiliac joint
Acetabulum - articulates with the head of femur - lateral surface - contains Lunate surface - region including all 3 fused bones
Lunate Surface - C-shaped, smooth, curved - articulates with head of femur -
Ilium - largest pubic bone - forms thee superior region of the hip bone
Ala -wide fan-shaped portion of the ilium - stops inferiorly at arcuate line
Arcuate line - medial, surface of the ilium
Iliac fossa - medial, side of the ala, depression
Anterior, posterior, Inferior gluteal lines - On the lateral surface of the ilium - attachment sites for the gluteal muscles
Auricular Surface -(ear) - roughened area - ilium articulates with the sacrum at sacroiliac joint
Iliac crest - superior most ridge of the ilium
Greater sciatic notch - sciatic nerve travels to the lower limb - big divot in bone
Ischium - near the superior and posterior margins of the acetabulum -
Ischial Spine - posterior to the acetabulum - prominent triangle that projects medially
Ischial body - bulky bone superior to the ischial spine
Lesser sciatic notch - semicircular depression inferior to the ischial spine
Ischial tuberosity (sitz bones) - posterolateral border of the ischium - roughened projection
Ramus of ischium Extends from the ischial tuberosity toward its anterior fusion with the pubis
Pubis - fuses with ilium and ischium at the acetabulum
Obturator foramen - space in the hip bone that encircle by both pubic and ischial rami - occlude
Pubic Crest - roughened ridge - anterosuperior surface of the superior ramus - ends at the pubic tubercle
Pubic Tubercle - attachment site for the inguinal ligament
Symphysial surface - roughened area on pubis - articulation between two pubic bones
Pectineal line - originates and extends diagonally across the pubis to merge with the arcuate line
Pelvic Brim - oval ridge that extends from the pubic crest, pectineal line, and arcuate line - divides pelvis into true and false pelvis
True pelvis - inferior to the pelvic brim - encloses pelvic cavity - contains pelvic organs
False pelvis - lies superior to the pelvic brim - enclosed by the ala of iliac bones - houses inferior abdominal organs
Pelvic Inlet - superiorly positioned space enclosed by pelvic brim - space between pubic and sacrum area
Pelvic Outlet - inferiorly placed opening bounded by the coccyx, ischial tuberosity, pubic symphysis - covered with muscles and skin and forms the body of the perineum
Perineum Made from the pelvic outlet
Sex differences in pelvis Female: shallower, wider, ilium flares more laterally, wider sciatic notch, preauricular sulcus
Suppubic Angle - angle formed when left and right pubic bones are aligned at their pubic symphyses. - females is wide, males is narrow
