| Political Party | an organization that tries to get political power by electing members to public office so that their political ideas can become laws or policies |
| Democratic Party | a political party that believes that the federal government should take a more active role in people's lives, particularly those who are in need; its origins can be traced back to the election of Andrew Jackson |
| Republican Party | a political party that believes that the federal government should play a small role in people's lives; they favor lower taxes and less government spending; it was established to combat the expansion of slavery |
| Platform | a document stating the aims and goals of a political party |
| Candidate | a person running for office |
| Primary Election | election in which voters decide which of the candidates within a party will represent the party in the general election |
| General Election | an election held to choose which candidate will hold office |
| Free & Fair Elections | elections are free and open to all citizens of voting age each individuals vote counts the same; characteristics include transparency, accountability, equal opportunity, and inclusivity |
| Electoral College | procedure for electing the United States president and vice-president |
| 12th Amendment | change to the constitution that required electors to cast separate votes for president and vice president, and added qualifications for vice presidential candidates; was result of the Jefferson/Burr tie in the election of 1800 |
| Special Interest Group | an organization of people with some common interest who try to influence government decisions |
| Lobbyist | a person hired by interest groups to influence lawmakers on their group's behalf |
| Political Action Committee | a committee set up by an interest group that raises money for election campaigns |
| Symbolism | the use of images or symbols to represent ideas or qualities |
| Bias | prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or idea |
| Propaganda | ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause or person. |
| Free Press | a press (media) that is able to report fully on government's activities |
| Media | the various methods of communicating information |
| Public Opinion | what the public thinks about a particular issue or set of issues |
| Watchdog/Watchdog Role | a person or group who acts as a protector or guardian; the role the media plays in exposing government corruption and waste |
