Political Party an organization that tries to get political power by electing members to public office so that their political ideas can become laws or policies
Democratic Party a political party that believes that the federal government should take a more active role in people's lives, particularly those who are in need; its origins can be traced back to the election of Andrew Jackson
Republican Party a political party that believes that the federal government should play a small role in people's lives; they favor lower taxes and less government spending; it was established to combat the expansion of slavery
Platform a document stating the aims and goals of a political party
Candidate a person running for office
Primary Election an election in which voters decide which of the candidates within a party will represent the party in the general election
General Election an election held to choose which candidate will hold office
Free and Fair Elections elections are free and open to all citizens of voting age each individuals vote counts the same; characteristics include transparency, accountability, equal opportunity, and inclusivity
Electoral College procedure for electing the United States president and vice-president
12th Amendment change to the constitution that required electors to cast separate votes for president and vice president, and added qualifications for vice presidential candidates; was result of the Jefferson/Burr tie in the election of 1800
