| Anterior | Front of the body (front view) |
| Posterior | back of the body (back view) |
| Midline | An imaginary vertical line dividing the body equally in half (right down the middle) |
| Lateral | Farther from midline |
| Medial | Nearer to midline |
| Superior | Toward the head/upper part of a structure (bird's-eye view, looking down) |
| Inferior | Away from the head/lower part of the structure (body) |
| Superficial | Close to the surface of the body |
| Deep | Away from the surface of the body (deeper) |
| Proximal | Closer to origin |
| Distal | Further from origin |
| Prone | Lying face down |
| Supine | Lying face up |
| Palmer | Anterior hand or palm of hand |
| Dorsal (hand) | Posterior surface of hand (back of hand) |
| Plantar | Inferior surface of foot (bottom of foot) |
| Dorsal (foot) | Superior surface of foot (top of foot) |
