Directional terms

Anterior Toward the front of the body
Posterior Toward the back of the body
Superior Above; closer to the head
Inferior Below; closer to the feet
Medial Toward the midline of the body
Lateral Away from the midline of the body
Superficial Toward the surface of the body
Deep Beneath the surface of the body
Proximal Closer to the trunk of the body
Distal Farther from the trunk of the body
Intermediate In-between two structures
Unilateral One Side of the body
Bilateral Two sides of the body
Ipsilateral Same side of the body
Contralateral opposite side of the body
