Story Elements Vocab
Our second vocabulary list of the year!
| Term | Definition |

| Plot | The sequence of events in a story — what happens from beginning to end. Usually has a problem and a solution. |
| Exposition | The beginning of the story where the author introduces the characters, setting. It usually ends with the conflict being introduced. |
| Rising Action | The events that build up the story’s excitement. These events show how the characters try to solve the problem. This is usually the biggest part of a story. |
| Climax | The most exciting part of the story. The problem reaches its biggest point, and the main character faces their biggest challenge. |
| Falling Action | The events that happen right after the climax. The story begins to calm down, and the problem starts to get solved. |
| Resolution | The ending of the story where the conflict is solved (or sometimes not solved). It shows how everything turns out for the characters. |
| Characters | The people, animals, or creatures in a story. They carry out the actions and move the plot forward. |
| Conflict | The main problem in the story. Conflict drives the plot forward and gives characters something to work through. |
| Setting | Where and when the story happens. It includes the place, time period, and sometimes the mood of the story. |
| Character Traits | The qualities that describe what a character is like. These can be physical traits (how they look) or personality traits (how they act, think, or feel). |
| Dialogue | The words that characters say to each other in a story. Dialogue is usually written inside quotation marks and shows how characters feel, think, or react. |
| Literature | Writing that tells a story, shares ideas, or expresses feelings. Examples: short stories, novels, plays, and poems. |
| Informational Text | Nonfiction writing that gives facts and teaches about real topics. Examples: textbooks, newspaper articles, biographies. |
| Theme | The big idea or lesson in a story. It’s what the author wants you to learn or think about. Found in literature texts. |
| Main Idea | What a text is mostly about. This is the most important point the author wants the reader to know. We find these mostly in informational texts. |
