NKS Heart Anatomy

TermDefinition
Situated between the left ventricle and the aorta, this prevents blood from blowing back into the ventricle after it has been pumped into the aorta and to the rest of the body. Aortic Valve
Found between the left atrium and left ventricle, this prevents the backflow of blood into the atrium when the ventricle contracts. Mitral Valve
Positioned between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, this prevents blood from blowing back into the ventricle after it has been pumped to the lungs. Pulmonary Valve
Located between the right atrium and the right ventricle, this prevents backflow of blood into the atrium when the ventricle contracts. Tricuspid Valve
The two lower chambers of the heart responsible for pumping blood out of the heart. The right one pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries, and the left one pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body via the aorta. Ventricles
The two upper chambers of the heart that receive and pump blood. The right one receives deoxygenated blood from the body via the vena cava, while the left one receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins. Atria (singular: atrium)
The double-layered sac that encloses and protects the heart. It contains pericardial fluid, which reduces friction as the heart beats. Pericardium
The outer layer of the heart wall, also part of the pericardium, providing protection and lubrication. Epicardium
The thick middle layer of the muscle responsible for the heart’s contractile force, pumping blood throughout the body. Myocardium
The inner layer lining the heart chambers and valves, ensuring smooth blood flow through the heart. Endocardium
The heart’s natural pacemaker, located in the right atrium, generating electrical impulses that initiate each heartbeat. Sinoatrial (SA) node
A cluster of cells located between the atria and ventricles that slows the electrical impulse before it moves to the ventricles, ensuring the atria have time to contract before the ventricles. Atrioventricular (AV) node
A bundle of fibers that transmits electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles. Bundle of His
Specialized fibers that distribute the electrical impulse throughout the ventricles, causing them to contract. Purkinje Fibers
