NKS Joint Terms

TermDefinition
A type of joint, fully movable, where the bones are separated by a fluid filled cavity. Example: knee and elbow joints. Synovial joint
A joint where bones are connected entirely by cartilage, allowing for limited movement. Example: joints between the vertebrae. Cartilaginous joints
A joint where bones are joined by dense, connective tissue, allowing for little to no movement. Example: the sutures of the skull. Fibrous joint
A joint where the rounded end of one bone fits into a cup-like cavity of another, allowing for wide-range motion. Example: hip and shoulder joints. Ball-and -socket joint
Joint that allows movement in one plane, similar to the opening and closing of the door. Example: elbow and knee joints. Hinge joint
A joint where one bone rotates around another. Example: the joint between C1 and C2 that allows head rotation. Pivot joint
A band of tough, fibrous connective tissue that connects bones to other bones, providing stability to joints. Ligament
A crescent-shaped cartilage found in the knee joint, acting as a cushion between the femur and tibia. Meniscus
A ring of cartilage surrounding ball and socket joints, providing stability and keeping the joint in place Labrum
The lubricating fluid within the joint of the same name that reduces friction and nourishes the joint. Synovial fluid
Smooth tissue, covering the insides of bones and joints, allowing for smooth movement, and protecting the bones from where. Articular cartilage
