| diaphysis | middle/shaft of the long bone |
| periosteum | membrane that forms the covering of bones, except at theif articular surfaces |
| compact bone | dense, hard layer of bone tissue |
| cancellous or spondgy bone | honey cone like structure found in the end of long bone acts as a Cushing for joint movement it also contains red blood morrow that produces most of the red blood cells founded in the body and long bone |
| Endosteum | Tough, connective tissue membrane interlining the medullary canal and containing the bone marrow. plays a role in repair and bone growth |
| Medullary canal | Narrow space or cavity throughout the length of the diaphysis that contains yellow bone marrow, which is made of fat cells |
| Condyle | Rounded process of bone that often joins with another bone at a joint |
| Crest | Narrow, usually prominent, ridge of bone |
| Epicondyle | Raised area on or above a condyle |
| Line | Narrow ridge of bone that is less prominent than a crest |
| Process | Bony projection |
| Trochanter | Very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process |
| Tubercle | Small rounded process |
| Tuberosity | Large rounded projection that may be roughened |
| Synarthrotic joint | no movement, skull/cranial |
| amphiarthrotic joint | permits very slight movement, vertebrae, pelvic |
| diarthrotic joint | Allows for free movement in a variety of directions, shoulder |
| Ligament | is a band of tissue that connects bones, joints or organs |
| Synovial fluid | thick, viscous fluid found in the joint, lubricates and protects joints during movement |
| Joint capsule | thick, flexible, fibrous membrane that surrounds the joint |
| protraction | The process of moving a body part forward |
| retraction | The process of moving a body part backward |
| flexion | closing the angle at a joint; bending at the knee or elbow |
| extension | opening the angle at a joint; straightening at the knee or elbow |
| adduction | movement toward the midline of the body; return of lifted arm to the body |
| rotation | turning of a body part on its own axis; turning of the forearm from the elbow |
| circumduction | circular movement from a central point; tracing a circle with an outstretched arm |
| pronation | turning downward; turning the palm of the hand downward |
| supination | turning upward; turning the palm of the hand upward |
| eversion | turning outward; turning the sole of the foot outward |
| inversion | turning inward; turning the sole of the foot inward |
| dorsiflexion | bending backward; moving the foot so that the toes point upward, away from the sole of the foot |
| abduction | movement away from the midline of the body; outward movement of the arm at the shoulder |
