abdominal cavities

quadrants/ pelvic regions/planes/cavities

TermDefinition
right upper quadrants (RUQ) Contains: Liver, Gallbladder, part of the pancreas, right kidney, and portions of the small and large intestines.
Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ) Contains: Stomach, spleen, left kidney, part of the pancreas, and portions of the small and large intestines.
Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ) Contains: Appendix, cecum, right ureter, and reproductive organs (right ovary and fallopian tube in females).
Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ) Contains: Sigmoid colon, left ureter, and reproductive organs (left ovary and fallopian tube in females).
Right Hypochondriac Region  upper right, near the ribs.
Right Lumbar Region  middle right, near the waist.
Right Inguinal Region  lower right, near the groin.
Epigastric Region  upper center, above the stomach.
Umbilical Region  center, around the belly button.
Hypogastric Region  lower center, below the stomach.
Left Hypochondriac Region  upper left, near the ribs.
Left Lumbar Region  middle left, near the waist.
Left Inguinal Region lower left, near the groin.

middle right regions ascending colon
middle center regions transverse colon, small intestine
middle left regions descending colon
lower right regions cecum, appendix
lower center regions urinary bladder, initial part of sigmoid colon
lower left regions sigmoid colon
sagittal planes divides the body into left and right sides. midsagittal refers to the an equal division of left and right sides, running along the midline of the body
transverse plane divides the body into upper and lower sections, not necessarily equal, cuts at the waist. superior(top) and inferior (bottom)
frontal plane divides the body into anterior(front) and posterior (back) sections

posterior back
superficial close to surface. (scratch)
deep far beneath surface(hysterectomy)
distal further from the attchment
proximal closer to the attachment
lateral further away from midline (left or right)
medial closer to the midline (middle)
supine lying on the back (posterior side)
prone lying on the stomach(anterior side)
cranial cavity within the skull; houses the meninges (brain)
spinal cavity traveling down the midline of the back and formed by the vertebrae, this contains the spinal cord
thoracic cavity within the chest, houses the lungs, heart, and major vessels
abdominal cavity within the abdomen, houses several major organs such as the stomach, liver, gallbladder, intestines
pelvic cavity inferior to the abdominal cavity; houses the bladder and reproductive organs
