tissue

TermDefinition
epithelial tissue absorption excretion protection secretion
connective tissue Covers muscles. Connects muscles to bones (e.g., tendons). Connects bones to joints (e.g., ligaments, Forms a support network for organs.
nerve tissue Enables coordination of body activities through impulse transmission.
striated (voluntary) muscle tissue controlled by the individual, striped, Forms skeletal muscles.
nerve tissue Composed of neurons (nerve cells). Acts as the functional unit of the nervous system.
involuntary or smooth muscle tissue Found in internal organs (e.g., stomach, intestines, blood vessels). Controlled by the autonomic nervous system., Not consciously controlled.
cardiac muscle tissue forms the heart, Involuntary – controlled by the autonomic nervous system. specialized type of striated muscle.
epithelial tissue Found on outer layer of skin, covering surface of organs and lining walls of body cavities. Sheetlike in appearance.
connective tissue Most abundant type of body tissue. Can be liquid (e.g., blood) or gel-like (e.g., cartilage). Fills spaces between cells and supports body structure.
