What is the primary function of the rectus abdominis muscle? Flexion of the vertebral column and compression of abdominal contents.
Which muscle abducts the arm and is a major shoulder muscle? Deltoid.
What is the origin and insertion of the biceps brachii? Origin: scapula (short head - coracoid process, long head - supraglenoid tubercle); Insertion: radial tuberosity.
Which muscle is the main extensor of the knee? Quadriceps femoris group.
What are the three main parts of a neuron? Cell body (soma), dendrites, and axon.
What is the function of the myelin sheath? To insulate the axon and speed up electrical impulse conduction.
Which part of the brain controls balance and coordination? Cerebellum.
What is the function of the rods and cones in the retina? Rods detect light and dark (low light vision), cones detect color and detail (bright light).
What hormone does the pancreas produce to lower blood glucose? Insulin.
Which gland is known as the "master gland"? Pituitary gland.
What hormone does the adrenal medulla secrete during the fight-or-flight response? Epinephrine (adrenaline).
What is the path of blood flow through the heart and lungs? Right atrium → right ventricle → lungs → left atrium → left ventricle → body.
What is the function of the valves in the heart? To prevent backflow of blood.
Which artery carries deoxygenated blood? Pulmonary artery.
What is the primary function of lymph nodes? Filter lymph and house lymphocytes that help fight infection.
What type of cells produce antibodies? B cells (plasma cells).
What muscle is primarily responsible for inspiration (inhaling)? Diaphragm.
What structure prevents food from entering the trachea during swallowing? Epiglottis.
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs? Alveoli.
