John Locke (1632-1704) an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of the Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "father of liberalism" , believed natural law
natural law Principal stating that all people have a conscience and can recognize the moral truths that exist in nature
Mayflower Compact Agreement of temporary government established by the Pilgrims before they settled in the New World, based on the idea of a covenant
social contract people agree to submit to a government in exchange for the protection of their rights
pluralism The existence of a diversity of ethnic, social, religious, and political backgrounds, various groups with different views on right and wrong
political ideology Set of related beliefs based on an underlying worldview that focuses on solving societal problems with the application of political power
culture wars Conflict between groups with different ideals, beliefs, and philosophies
