| alveoli | Microscopic air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs between air and blood. |
| lymphatic system | A network of vessels, nodes, and organs that return interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and aid in immune defense. |
| erythrocyte | A red blood cell; a biconcave cell that transports oxygen via hemoglobin. |
| tidal volume | The amount of air inhaled or exhaled during normal, resting breathing. |
| hepatic portal system | A blood vessel system that carries nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs to the liver. |
| endocrine gland | A gland that secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream rather than through a duct. |
| spermatogenesis | The process of sperm cell development in the testes. |
| autonomic nervous system (ANS) | The part of the nervous system controlling involuntary body functions, divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. |
