| Term | Definition |

| Trachea | The windpipe; a tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi, allowing air passage to the lungs. |
| Alveoli | Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs between oxygen and carbon dioxide. |
| Bronchi | The two main branches of the trachea that lead into each lung. |
| Pulmonary ventilation | The process of moving air into and out of the lungs (also known as breathing). |
| External respiration | The exchange of gases between the alveoli and the blood in pulmonary capillaries. |
| Pleura | A double-layered membrane surrounding each lung and lining the chest cavity to reduce friction. |
| Internal respiration | The exchange of gases between the blood and the body’s tissues. |
| Epiglottis | A flap of tissue that closes over the trachea when swallowing to prevent food from entering the airway. |
| Inspiration | The act of breathing in; inhalation. |
| Respiratory membrane | The thin barrier where gas exchange occurs between alveolar air and the blood in capillaries. |
