| diaphragm | the flat muscular sheet that separates the thorax and abdomen; a major muscle of respiration |
| actin | contractile protein found in the thin myofilaments of skeletal muscle |
| extrinsic muscle | muscle originating from outside of the part or region being moved |
| thermoreceptor | sensory receptor activated by heat or cold |
| cranial nerve | any of twelve pairs of nerves that attach to the undersurface of the brain and conduct impulses between the brain and structures in the head, neck, and thorax |
| axon | in a neuron, the single process that extends from the axon hillock and transmits impulses away from the cell body |
| brainstem | part of brain containing the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata |
| hormone | substance secreted by an endocrine gland into the bloodstream that acts on a specific target tissue to produce a given response |
| acetylcholine | type of neurotransmitter used by motor neurons at neuromuscular junctions to stimulate muscle contraction at or in some autonomic synapses |
| basal cell | cell of the base layer of a structure |
| insulin | hormone secreted by beta cells of the pancreatic islets that increases the uptake of glucose and amino acids by most body cells |
| aorta | largest systemic artery; extends directly from the left ventricle |
| electrolyte | substance that dissociates into ions in solution, rendering the solution capable of conducting an electric current |
| fight or flight reaction | changes produced by increased sympathetic impulses allowing the body to deal with any type of stress |
| ischemic | decreased blood supply to a tissue resulting in impairment of cell function |
