axon in a neuron, the single process that extends from the axon hillock and transmits impulses away from the cell body
brainstem part of brain containing the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata
hormone substance secreted by an endocrine gland into the bloodstream that acts on a specific target tissue to produce a given response
acetylcholine type of neurotransmitter used by motor neurons at neuromuscular junctions to stimulate muscle contraction at or in some autonomic synapses
basal cell cell of the base layer of a structure
insulin hormone secreted by beta cells of the pancreatic islets that increases the uptake of glucose and amino acids by most body cells
aorta largest systemic artery; extends directly from the left ventricle
electrolyte substance that dissociates into ions in solution, rendering the solution capable of conducting an electric current
fight or flight reaction changes produced by increased sympathetic impulses allowing the body to deal with any type of stress
ischemic decreased blood supply to a tissue resulting in impairment of cell function
