Unit 2: Influences on Government Vocabulary Practice

TermDefinition
Separation of Powers the structure of the federal government where three branches have their own distinct powers and responsibilities
Checks and Balances a principle of the federal government that allows each branch to limit the power of the other branches
Natural Rights individuals are born with basic rights that cannot be taken away by governments = life, liberty, and property; also known as unalienable rights.
Natural Law aws that are derived from natural rights (life, liberty, property) to protect basic freedoms of all people in society
Social Contract an implied agreement between the governed and the government that defines their rights, duties, & limitations
The Enlightenment A period in European history focused on reason, ideas on government, & the value of happiness
Popular Sovereignty The principle that the government’s authority comes from the will of the people
Individual Rights Freedoms that people believe they should have without government restrictions, including the rights to free speech and religion
Religious Liberty The freedom to believe and practice any religion without government interference
Self-Government People create and run their own government. This idea came from historical documents like the Mayflower Compact & Common Sense
