| Osteon | The structural unit of compact bone, consisting of a central canal surrounded by concentric rings (lamellae) of bone matrix. |
| Sarcomere | The basic contractile unit of muscle fiber, made up of actin and myosin filaments that slide past each other during muscle contraction. |
| Myelin Sheath | A fatty layer that wraps around the axons of some neurons, speeding up the transmission of nerve impulses. |
| Synapse | The junction between two neurons or a neuron and a muscle where communication occurs via neurotransmitters. |
| Neurotransmitter | A chemical messenger released by neurons to transmit a signal to another neuron, muscle, or gland. |
| Hypodermis | The layer of tissue beneath the dermis of the skin, containing fat and connective tissue; also called the subcutaneous layer. |
| Epiphyseal Plate | A layer of hyaline cartilage in growing bones where new bone growth occurs; also known as the growth plate. |
| Motor Unit | A motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it innervates; responsible for muscle contraction. |
| Cerebellum | The brain region responsible for coordinating voluntary movements, balance, and posture. |
| Hormone | A chemical substance produced by endocrine glands that travels through the bloodstream to regulate specific body functions. |
