Vowel Terms
Terms for categorising vowel sounds in English.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Vowel | A voiced sound that is made without blocking airflow in the mouth and is shaped by tongue position and lip rounding. |
| Close/High | The tongue is raised high in the mouth. |
| Mid | The tongue is raised to the middle of the mouth. |
| Open/Low | The tongue is low in the mouth and the mouth is wide open. |
| Front | The tongue is pushed towards the front of the mouth. |
| Central | The tongue stays at the centre of the mouth. |
| Back | The tongue is pulled towards the back of the mouth. |
| Rounded | The lips form a circle. |
| Unrounded | The lips are spread or neutral |
| Tense | The tongue is stretched and the muscles are more active. |
| Lax | The tongue is more relaxed. |
| Diphthong | A vowel sound that glides from one vowel position to another in the same syllable. |
| Monophthong | A pure vowel sound that doesn't glide. |
| Short vowel sound | A quick and relaxed vowel sound that is different from the vowel's name that is always a monophthong. |
| Long vowel sound | A tense and slightly longer vowel sound that usually resembles a vowel's name and can either be a diphthong or a monophthong. |
| R-coloured vowel | A vowel sound that is blended with a following R sound that makes the vowel sound less noticable and is common in North America. |
