Types of Govt. Vocab

Unit 1: Types of Government Vocabulary Practice

TermDefinition
Government The governing body given the authority to control and make decisions for a country.
Constitution A detailed written framework of government, that includes the structures & functions of all parts of the government.
Limited Government The government's powers are restricted by a Constitution.
Federalism The division of power between the national government and state governments.
Consent of the Governed the idea that government gains its power/authority from the people (the governed)
Republic A way of governing in which the power rests with the PEOPLE. The people vote for representatives, & elect a President
Election An organized vote of people in a community, state, or nation to elect a person for political office (EX: President)
Rule of Law a principle stating all persons and institutions are accountable to laws and must be transparent; no one is above the law
Monarchy a form of government headed by a king or queen who inherits the position, rules for life, and holds power that can range anywhere between limited to absolute
Confederal System A system of government in which the power is held by the individual states, the central gov. has very limited power.
