| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mitosis | process of organizing and distributing nuclear DNA dur-ing cell division, is a continuous process (Table 7-5) consisting of four distinct phases: 1. Prophase 2. Metaphase 3. Anaphase 4. Telophase |
| Meiosis | the type of cell division that occurs only in primitive sex cells during the process of becoming mature sex cells. |
| Dysplasia | abnormal change in shape, size, or organization of cells in a tissue and is often associated with neoplasms. |
| Afferent | signal is traveling toward a particular center or point of reference |
| Efferent | the signal is moving away from a center or other point of reference. |
| Catabolism | consists of chemical reactions that not only break down relatively complex compounds into simpler ones but also release energy from them. |
| Anabolism | chemical reactions that build larger and more complex chemical molecules from smaller subunits |
| functional groups | often used to describe certain arrangements of atoms attached to the carbon core of many organic molecules. |
| free radical | group that is temporarily unattached and is highly reactive because of unpaired electrons. |
| Microvilli | Short, fingerlike extensions of plasma membrane; supported internally by microfilaments |
| Golgi apparatus | Stack of flattened sacs (cisternae) surrounded by vesicles |
| Mitochondria | Tiny membranous capsule surrounding an inner, highly folded membrane embedded with enzymes; has small, ringlike chromosome (DNA) |
